General infoQ: What is the purpose of this program?A: The Summer Internship Program is designed to provide Pakistani students/graduates an opportunity to spend a summer working side-by-side with some of the most talented scientists in the world in a research environment devoted exclusively to the betterment of Pakistan. Q: Where are these training opportunities located?A: These internships are currently only available in the research laboratories of Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS - http://www.lums.edu.pk/). All of the laboratories are located on the main campus in Lahore, Pakistan. Q: Is this a paid internship?A: NUPSA aims to provide several travel/maintenance bursaries for this program. Please mention in your application if you would like to be considered for funding as these will be awarded on a case-by-case basis. Q: Is summer housing provided?A: Assistance with on-campus accommodation will be provided through NUPSA for the duration of the internship Q: What are the start and end dates for the program?A: Start and end dates are negotiated individually by the applicant and the LUMS investigator who has selected him/her as an intern. Students selected for the program will usually begin work in July-August. Projects are expected to run for an average duration of 6-12 weeks. EligibilityQ: Can I apply if I am not a citizen or permanent resident of United Kingdom?A: Yes. We are accepting applications from both UK and Pakistani citizens. Q: Are there any eligibility criteria in addition to citizenship?A: Yes, you must be either enrolled at an accredited U.K university or a recent graduate (within 3 years of graduation). Q: Is the summer program limited to specific subjects?A: No. However, most summer positions are in research laboratories. You should have successfully completed courses (A-levels or the equivalent) in either Mathematics; Biology, Physics and/or Chemistry. Application procedureQ: Is there a deadline for submission of applications?A: Yes, the deadline is 7th June 2010 for all completed applications. Please send your application forms along with your CV to mariam.ayub[at]nupsa.org Q: When should I apply?A: We recommend that you apply as soon as possible at the following link: http://nupsa.org/internships/how-to-apply Q: Who should write my letters of recommendation?A: You should select references who are able to explain why you would be a good addition to a research group. Anyone who could comment on your skills in the laboratory, creativity, problem solving abilities, motivation, ability to handle complex scientific literature and concepts, etc. would be a good choice. Recommendations from individuals with a science research background are likely to carry more weight. We require 2 references, one of these should be your personal tutor, supervisor or departmental representative. Q: Is there a deadline for receipt of my reference letters?A: All reference letters must be received by 7th June 2010. Q: Who ensures that letters of reference are received?A: You are responsible for making certain that we receive your letters of reference. You should request letters to be forwarded to us from your references by the deadline stated. Q: Should I list all the courses and grades that I have completed or only my science courses?A: Please list all of your completed courses with grades, as well as the courses that you plan to complete by the end of the academic year. After applyingQ: How will I be notified if I am selected?A: NUPSA will inform all applicants of their outcome through email within 2 weeks after the deadline. Q: Do I need to submit my official transcripts?A: Only those who are accepted into the program need to submit an official transcript. In the event that you are accepted into the program, you will be informed where to send this documentation. Otherwise, it is not necessary for you to send a transcript. |
